Understanding Our Husbands - Part 5

This is the last segment in the series “Understanding Our Husbands.” Please hear my heart on this potentially “touchy” subject. Ladies, we need to take make an effort to look attractive for our husbands. I did not realize HOW important this part of marriage was…until…A year after giving birth to our daughter, Joanna in 2004, I was still 90 pounds overweight and decided that it was futile even trying to lose weight so I gave up. I not only gave up on losing weight, but I did not care about my appearance either, and dressed sloppily, giving little effort to my hair, makeup or hygiene. My dear husband, Steve would always be supportive and never said anything unkind to me. But one day when we were at our son’s soccer game, I was standing off to the side of the field away from Steve, when I overheard a man ask him, “Who’s that over there?” Steve replied, “Who?” The man pointed to me, “THAT one over there.” “That’s my wife,” my husband responded defensively. “Oh, you like them big!” the man replied.

Well, I would love to tell you that I was not hurt by that remark, but I was. There was no doubt that it was cruel and unfeeling, but it sure woke me up from my sloppy slumber! Steve’s friend (not the guy at the field!) put it this way, “It’s not that you have to be a size 6 or even a size 8. We just want to know that you are making an effort to take care of yourself because you care about us.” And remember ladies, your husband is visual and visually stimulated.

I got the message loud and clear and solicited the help of a girlfriend who took great care of herself and dressed fabulously! She coached me on how to put outfits together, what shoes to wear and showed me how to accessorize. I was so motivated that I started exercising and even lost a few pounds. My husband noticed an immediate difference in my appearance and was ecstatic. And he is still ecstatic today, as I continue to make an effort to take care of myself.
